# map.army — Military Map Generator > map.army is a free progressive web app (PWA) by gs-soft AG for creating, editing, saving, exporting, and sharing tactical and military situation maps. It renders military symbols to the MIL-STD-2525 standard (via gs-soft's Military Symbol Service, MSS) on interactive 2D and 3D maps. It runs in any modern browser with no install, and can be installed as a PWA with `.milxlyz` file association. Use cases: planning military exercises and missions, maintaining organisational overlays with standardised symbology, printing or exporting a situation as PDF, and sharing a situation as a read-only link, iframe embed, or MilX layer file. Audience: military planners, exercise staff, and hobbyists drawing tactical maps. Data lives locally in the browser (with optional share links) — no per-user server account is required for the free app. ## App - [map.army app](https://www.map.army/): The Military Map Generator — open it in a browser to start drawing a tactical situation. - [About map.army](https://www.map.army/about/en.html): What map.army is, who builds it, and how it can be used. - [Examples](https://www.map.army/example/en.html): Example tactical maps and situations. - [PWA manifest](https://www.map.army/manifest.json): Web app manifest for installing map.army as a Progressive Web App. ## Documentation - [Documentation home](https://www.map.army/doc/en/): User documentation — guides for symbols, layers, data exchange, export, and PWA installation. - [Documentation index for AI/LLM crawlers (English)](https://www.map.army/doc/llms.txt): Machine-readable index of every documentation page with one-line descriptions. - [Documentation index (Deutsch)](https://www.map.army/doc/de/llms.txt): German documentation index. - [Documentation index (Français)](https://www.map.army/doc/fr/llms.txt): French documentation index. - [Documentation index (Italiano)](https://www.map.army/doc/it/llms.txt): Italian documentation index. ## Key concepts - [MilX file format](https://www.map.army/doc/en/about/milx-format/): The MilX military exchange format (`.milx`, `.milxly`, `.milxlyz`) used by map.army for tactical overlays. - [Free vs Pro](https://www.map.army/doc/en/about/pro-vs-free/): What the free hosted app includes versus the map.army pro offering (timeline, BFT, user administration, custom WMTS/WMS base maps). - [Compatibility](https://www.map.army/doc/en/about/compatibility/): Supported browsers and operating systems. - [FAQ](https://www.map.army/doc/en/about/faq/): Common questions — offline use, closed-network deployment, MIL-STD-2525 symbols, accounts. ## Related - [symbol.army](https://www.symbol.army/): Sibling site for browsing and authoring military symbols (MSS / MIL-STD-2525). - [gs-soft AG](https://www.gs-soft.com/CMS/en/): The vendor that develops map.army and the Military Symbol Service. - [User forum](https://groups.google.com/g/militarymap): Community forum for map.army questions and discussion.
