This glossary lists core terms used across the docs. Prefer these spellings and keep entries short.

| Progressive Web App (PWA) | Installable web app; use this term when the PWA concept is meant. |
| Web application (generic) | Generic references to the site/app; not the PWA concept. |
| Military Map / map.army | The application “Military Map”; the website “map.army”. |
| MilX (Military eXchange format) | File format for layers. Extensions: .milxlyz (ZIP), .milxly (XML). |
| MilX layer | A map overlay stored in MilX format. |
| Overlay | Map overlay rendered above the base map. |
| MSS (Military Symbol Service) | Backend service for rendering military symbology. |
| Symbol editor | Editor to add modifiers and attributes to a symbol (MSS symbol editor). |
| Symbol gallery | UI to browse and pick symbols. |
| Tactical graphic | Tactical drawing per MIL-STD-2525/APP-6. |
| Share | Link-based sharing: read-only | edit & copy | edit & overwrite. |
| iFrame | HTML element to embed the app in a web page. |
| Read-only mode | Mode in which content cannot be edited. |
| Options / Settings | Application options and settings screens. |
| 3D Map View | Read-only 3D view of the map. |
| Coordinate grid | Grid such as MGRS, UTM, WGS84 drawn on the map. |
| Pacific View | Map wraps at the Pacific instead of the Atlantic. |
| Full screen | Display the app in full-screen mode. |
| Compass | Control to reorient the map to north-up. |
| Hint | UI callout used in docs for short notes. |
