Data Protection: What a Share Stores and Who Sees It

What leaves your browser when you use map.army, where it goes, and who can see it.

Overview

map.army keeps your work in the browser tab. Nothing you draw is sent anywhere until you save, export or share it:

  • Saving or exporting a MilX, KML or NVG file sends the layers to the MilX conversion service, which returns the file to you — see Project model.
  • Sharing stores a copy of the shared layers on the share server, where everyone with the link can open it. That is the one place your map is kept outside your own device, and the rest of this page is mostly about it.

What a share stores

When you create or update a share, map.army uploads two things to the MilX share service at www.symbol.army, operated by gs-soft AG:

  • The shared layers, as one MilX file — every MilX layer in the share, with all symbols and their modifiers.
  • A settings document, so that recipients see the map as you set it up: your symbol format, unit settings, map settings (base map, grid), 3D view settings, the current map view, and the definitions of any online image or vector layers (their web addresses).

It does not upload image or vector files you added from your own device, your other layers outside the share, or your browser storage.

Who can open a share

A share link looks like this:

https://www.map.army/?ShareID=…&UserType=…

  • ShareID identifies the share.
  • UserType is a secret code, not a type name. It is what grants access — there is no password and no user account. Anyone who has the complete link can open the share, with the rights of that link.

Each share has up to three links, one per kind of access:

LinkThe holder can
Read Onlyview the share; nothing can be changed or saved locally
Edit & Copyedit and save a local copy, or create a new share from it — the original stays untouched
Edit & Overwritechange the share itself; every update creates a new version for everyone

Pass on the weakest link that does the job, and treat an Edit & Overwrite link like a key. If Include Version in Link is ticked, the link also carries &VersionID=… and opens that version instead of the newest.

Hint: The link is the protection. Anyone who sees the full address — in an e-mail, a chat, a screenshot of the address bar — can open the share. map.army also keeps the link of the last share you opened in your browser storage, so that it can offer to reopen it; on a shared computer, clear the site data of www.map.army when you are done.

How long a share is kept

The share dialog states it: MilX Share is available for 180 days. If the Share Link is not used during this period, it will be deleted after this period. Each update adds a new version, and older versions can be loaded from the share’s history.

There is no delete button for a share in map.army. A share you no longer need disappears once its link has gone unused for 180 days; to have one removed earlier, contact gs-soft AG.

What stays in your browser

map.army remembers your settings in the browser’s local storage: language, theme, symbol format and Work Mode, unit, map and 3D settings, the last map view, export settings, your Favorites and recently used symbols, the definitions of online image and vector layers, and the link of the last share you opened.

The content of your MilX layers is not stored there. Close or reload the tab without saving, and unsaved work is gone — see Project model. All of these settings can be downloaded and moved to another browser under Application Settings.

Usage statistics

The public map.army at www.map.army uses Google Analytics to count page views and the use of functions — for example that a layer was imported, a map exported or a share created.

  • The share ID and secret are removed from the page address before it is reported, so a share link never reaches the statistics.
  • Only the campaign parameters of a link (such as utm_source) are kept in the reported address.
